Lead with Positivity: Social Media Strategies for High-Performing Leaders
When it comes to social media, many business leaders shy away, feeling their story isn’t captivating enough or fearing they’ll say the wrong thing. I get it—putting yourself out there is intimidating. But as someone who’s grown a total following of just under 400k along on my Olympic journey, I’ve learned that social media is a powerful tool for connection, inspiration, and leadership. Here are three simple strategies to elevate your presence online.
1. Share the Journey, Not Just the Wins
The highlight reel is great, but people want to see what happens behind the scenes. Before Birmingham 2022 and Paris 2024, I committed to a 100-day countdown on social media. I shared the exciting moments, the hard days, and even the mundane grind. Why? Because success is built on the full picture, not just the glamorous parts.
As a CEO, don’t wait until the product launch or the big contract to engage your audience. Show them how decisions are made, the challenges you overcome, and the effort that goes into creating something meaningful.
Quality is important, but:
Don’t let perfection be the enemy of the good.
It’s okay if you aren’t at your best every single day.
The lows provide more lessons than the highs.
Reflection: Authenticity builds trust, and trust builds influence.
2. Recognise the Power of Your Story
One of the biggest misconceptions among business leaders and professionals is thinking your story isn’t interesting enough. Everyone’s journey is unique. I didn’t know if my path to becoming an Olympic diver would resonate beyond sport, but it has turned out to be my superpower. Your leadership journey, whether it involves building a business from scratch or guiding a team through tough times, is valuable.
Nobody else in the world:
Is a 6ft 2in black diver who grew up in the UK and chose to represent Jamaica.
Has seen the world through my own eyes.
Was taught the values I was taught as a kid.
Pro Tip: Embrace what makes your story different—it’s exactly what will connect with others and inspire them.
3. Preach Positivity
Social media can be a place for negativity, but as a leader, your voice has the power to set a different tone. Share uplifting stories, celebrate small wins, and highlight the efforts of your team. You never know who’s watching your content—your words could be the boost they need. This doesn’t mean avoiding challenges. It’s about framing them in a way that shows resilience and optimism. Positivity not only strengthens your online presence but also motivates your audience to strive for better.
Personal Insight: I’ve always tried to be a positive voice, whether during a training session at the diving pool or in the comments on Instagram, regardless of how well I know the person. There is an abundance of opportunity in this world so no need to be overly competitive or jealous.
Shifting Your Mindset
Social media is an opportunity, not a chore. By authentically sharing your journey, embracing your uniqueness, and keeping your message positive, you can transform your online presence into a leadership platform. You never know who you might influence.
Remember, your audience isn’t just following your title; they’re following you and everything you’re about.
